The idea of requiring federally compliant identification before purchasing some over-the-counter medicine is being floated by A senior US Department of Homeland Security official. Over the past year or so, pharmacies have been required to track buyers of drugs that contain pseudoephedrine because of the production of methamphetamine. The comment came five days after the agency released its final rules for the REAL ID Act. Some are saying that Baker’s statement underscores the idea that the scope and purpose of the REAL ID Act will gradually expands over time.

Senate OKs bill to extend eavesdropping

The Senate has approved new rules for government eavesdropping on phone calls and e-mails, which will grant legal immunity to telecommunications companies that helped in the snooping after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The bill is to give retroactive protection to companies that acted without court permission. About 40 lawsuits were filed against the telecom companies by people alleging violations of wiretapping and privacy laws. President Bush said that it is essential for the private sector is to give the government the help it needs.
